What Is IPTV? How Internet Protocol TV Works
IPTV stands for Internet Protocol Television. Instead of receiving television through a cable box, a satellite dish or an antenna, IPTV delivers channels and videos over your internet connection — the same connection that carries websites, video calls and streaming apps.
How IPTV works
With cable, every channel is broadcast to your home all the time and your set-top box picks one. With IPTV, nothing is sent until you ask for it. When you select a channel or a movie, your device requests that stream from a server and the video is delivered to you over the internet.
- A provider runs the servers and gives you login details (for example a server address, a username and a password, or a playlist link).
- A player app on your device uses those details to load the channel list, TV guide and on-demand library.
- Your internet connection carries the stream. The better and more stable the connection, the better the picture.
This split matters: the provider supplies the content and the login, and the player only displays it. We explain it in more detail in IPTV service vs IPTV player app.
What you need to watch IPTV
- A compatible device — a Smart TV, Fire TV / Firestick, Android TV, Apple TV, a phone or tablet, a computer or a MAG box. See the device setup guides.
- An IPTV player app that supports your provider's login method.
- An IPTV subscription that gives you the login details.
- A stable internet connection. As a general guide: about 5 Mbps for SD, 10 Mbps for HD, 15 Mbps for Full HD and 25 Mbps or more for 4K — and more if several screens stream at once. See our internet speed requirements for the full table.
What you can watch
A typical IPTV subscription combines several kinds of content:
- Live TV — news, entertainment, kids, international and sports channels. King IPTV includes 25,000+ live channels.
- VOD (video on demand) — a library of movies and series you can start whenever you like. King IPTV includes 120,000+ movies and series.
- PPV (pay-per-view) events where available.
- EPG (electronic program guide) — the on-screen TV schedule.
IPTV terms you will see
| Term | What it means |
|---|---|
| EPG | The TV guide: what is on now and next, per channel. |
| VOD | Movies and series you can play on demand. |
| PPV | Individually accessed events such as fights or special broadcasts. |
| Xtream Codes login | A common login method: server URL + username + password. Most players support it. |
| M3U playlist | A playlist link or file that lists channels. Some players and devices use it instead of Xtream Codes. |
| Catch-up | Watching a programme that already aired. Availability depends on the player you use. |
| Simultaneous connection | One stream playing at a time on your subscription. See how many connections you need. |
IPTV compared with cable
IPTV usually offers a much larger channel and on-demand library, works on many devices instead of one box, and does not require equipment installation. Cable offers long-established infrastructure and does not depend on your home internet. Our full comparison is in IPTV vs cable TV.
Is IPTV legal?
IPTV is a delivery technology, and the technology itself is not the issue. What matters is whether the content you watch is distributed with the rights to do so. You are responsible for making sure your use of any service complies with the laws and regulations that apply to you.
